Notary Fees: What to Expect

Updated: Aug 2

When planning to get a document notarized, it’s important to know what fees you might encounter. Notary fees can vary depending on your state, the type of notarization, and whether you're requesting mobile or after-hours services. Understanding these fees helps you avoid surprises and plan accordingly.

1. Standard Notary Fees (In-Office)

Most states regulate the maximum fee a notary can charge for each notarial act. For example, in California, the maximum is $15 per signature. This fee usually applies to basic services like acknowledgments, jurats, or administering an oath.

2. Mobile Notary Fees

Need a notary to come to you? Mobile notaries charge travel fees on top of the standard notary cost. These fees can range from $25 to over $100 depending on the distance traveled, time of day, and urgency of the request. Always ask for a breakdown of travel charges upfront.

3. Remote Online Notarization (RON)

Some states allow online notarization, where the process happens via video call with secure identity verification. These services often come with a flat rate or package fee—usually between $25–$50 per notarization. Online notarizations are especially convenient for out-of-state or international clients.

4. Specialty or Rush Fees

If you're requesting services after business hours, on weekends, or during holidays, expect after-hours or rush fees. Notaries offering loan signings, real estate closings, or apostille processing may also charge more due to the complexity of the task.

5. Bulk Discounts or Flat Rates

If you have multiple documents that need notarization, ask if the notary offers bulk pricing or a flat rate. This is common for businesses or repeat clients needing multiple signings in one visit.

Always Ask for Transparency

A professional notary will clearly explain all fees before providing service. You should never feel surprised or unsure about the cost. Asking upfront helps build trust and avoid confusion.

Whether you're notarizing one signature or ten, knowing the standard pricing structure helps you choose the right service for your needs and budget.
